    Thoughts on Art and Creativity

I’ve been reading “Creative Analysis” by George Hagman. Hagman writes on the connections between psychotherapy and art. This work has broader implications on the foundational definitions of art and creativity. His contention is that both art and psychoanalysis are art because they are the movement from a subjective experience to an objective entity outside of oneself. The artist begins with an idea that is felt within his/herself that is unknowable to others. It is personal, private and unformulated in that it hasn’t been shared or coalesced into a specific object. Through the creative act of producing the art; the art work is created and at the same time, the artist is changed. The artist becomes an artist through production of the work. In psychoanalysis there is also a movement from personal and unformulated. In talking with the therapist, the client’s way of being is brought forth and shared. This movement forward causes it to be open for interpretation and analysis in the same way as a work of art.
